R. Dennis Layne is Professor of Woodwinds and Chamber Music at St. Cloud State University. He came to SCSU in 1972 as Director of Bands and Professor of Woodwinds. During the eleven years under his direction, the SCSU Wind Ensemble performed with distinction at MMEA and CBDNA conferences. He is a founding member of the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra. He has been soloist with the SCSO and with the San Bernandino Symphony where he was also principal clarinetist.
Dr. Layne's students have been in principal positions in Minnesota All-State Bands and Orchestras and in Intercollegiate Honor Bands. Both flute and clarinet students have won Young Artist Competitions and have been soloists with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra. He received degrees from Weber College, Utah State University, University of Redlands and the University of Southern California.
His teachers include Max F. Dalby, Roger Stevens, Carol Wincenc, Julia Bogorad, Dominick Fera, Mitchell Lurie, and his mother, Edith Layne. His mother passed on the love of music when teaching Dennis how to play the clarinet at age eight on the same metal instrument her father had given her when she was a child. All seven of Dr. Layne's children have also learned to play various instruments.
