Laurie Hatcher Merz began teaching bassoon at St. Cloud State in 2006. She is presently Second Bassoon in the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, is a busy free-lance player in the Twin Cities, performs educational outreach programs with her wind trio, The Second Winds, and is a substitute bassoonist for the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
In 2003, she was awarded the Classic Lake Conference Fine Arts Award for excellence in teaching, performing and community service. When not performing and teaching, Laurie manages a home-based business selling her bassoon reeds to clients around the country.
In addition to a passion for music, Ms. Merz is Vice-President of her local historical society. She has served on the Board of Directors for over 18 years and is dedicated to the preservation of family histories and artifacts in western Hennepin county.
