Lewis is an Assistant Athletic Director and Liaison for the Husky Sports Band where he communicates and coordinates band performances and development throughout the season.

He earned a masters degree in sports management from St. Cloud State University and bachelors degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota. John Lewis spent four seasons as an assistant football coach at Murray State University in Kentucky before joining the Huskies and was an assistant football coach and assistant Life Skills Director at SCSU from 1998 to 2000.

Lewis played football for the University of Minnesota where during the 1992 season he led the team in kickoff returns and ranked third in scoring and all-purpose yardage. He held four school records including longest reception in school history (94 yards), most yards returned in a season (715), most yards returned in a game (223), and most returns in a season (29).

He was a two-year football letter winner, held the Big Ten record for kickoff yards in a single game, received the "Bobby Bell" Awards for outstanding special teams players, was chosen to play in the 1992 Blue/Gray All-Star Football Game, and was chosen by the Houston Oilers in 1993 as a free agent.
