Music Department - St. Cloud State University
St. Cloud State Bands

The St. Cloud State University Bands have a rich history of music-making established by previous directors R. Dennis Layne, Kenton Frohrip and Rik Hansen. We offer a dynamic and diversified program for musicians of all skill levels. Each ensemble provides students valuable musical and life experiences.

All ensembles are open to both music majors and non-music majors. Our bands contain students from all across campus and the St. Cloud community. Scholarships are available to talented wind & percussion students who major in music and also to non-music majors qualifying on a high need instrument.

Why should I play in a college band?

Joining a music ensemble your first semester will immediately connect you with those “like minds” you came to call family in high school. No matter how busy you are, you will want a fun, creative outlet and change from your other commitments.

Choose an ensemble based on your experience and interests, and you will find the time commitment manageable and more importantly a valuable experience. Your experience in the band in high school has more than prepared you to walk into any of our groups and contribute immediately.

Am I good enough to play in the college band?

Campusband studentsThe Bands at SCSU are for college students with typical background in high school band from all over the state of Minnesota. Most students have 2 or more years experience in Concert Band, Marching Band or Pep Band and this will prepare you EXPERTLY to play in any of our ensembles. Choose the group that best suits your interests or contact a director for more advice about which group is best for you.

Participation in ANY music ensemble counts towards the “General Education” LEP Goal Area 6 required for all degrees.

All SCSU degrees require two courses in the Humanities and Fine Arts (Goal Area 6). Adding any music ensemble will satisfy 1 of the 2 required courses. Add an ensemble to your course schedule today! Contact any director for more information about openings and to schedule an audition, if needed.

Consider trying an ensemble this fall!

We will be having open rehearsals the first week of class so you’re welcome to come try us out. Instruments are available from the Department for a nominal rental fee. We’d love to have you join us!
