Cellist Joel Salvo maintains an active career as both performer and educator throughout the United States and Canada. An Ohio native, he was a part of the musical community in Cleveland for many years and performed alongside members of the Cleveland Orchestra and Opera Cleveland. He was also featured in a live solo recital broadcast over WCLV Cleveland Classical Radio.

Since arriving in Minnesota, Dr. Salvo has been a regular guest of the Schubert Club Courtroom Concert series. As a member of Twin-Cities based contemporary group Ensemble 61, he has performed on the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music series and has been featured on Minnesota Public Radio. Currently, he is also a member of Trio Matisse, a harp, flute, and cello trio that actively tours across the United States.

A devoted teacher of young musicians, Dr. Salvo has worked with some of the nation’s leading youth ensembles including the Detroit Civic Youth Orchestra, the Michigan Youth Symphony, and the Lakewood Project youth rock-orchestra. Before joining the faculty at St. Cloud State, he spent five years as the conductor of the chamber orchestra at the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Dr. Salvo holds degrees from the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music, the University of Michigan, and a Doctorate from the University of Minnesota. His primary teachers include Regina Mushabac, Anthony Elliott, Richard Aaron, and Tanya Remenikova. He has also participated in an intensive study of contemporary cello repertoire with famed new music cello-soloist Anssi Karttunen.
