Audition FAQ

How Do I Schedule My Audition?

Please complete the form to request a 10 minute time during audition dates. You will receive an audition time and confirmation within 48 hours of your submission. If you do not receive confirmation within 48 hours, please contact Sarah Cohen at smcohen@stcloudstate.edu

What Will the Audition Look Like?

Auditions are intended to be a welcoming, positive experience. Your daughter will be asked to:

Echo rhythmic and melodic patterns
Sing guided vocalizes to check range
Perform a song alone (it can be as simple as a folk song like twinkle, twinkle or happy birthday)
Sing a melody, round, and ostinato with the director
Respond to why she would like to join Cantabile

Will My Daughter Need to Prepare Anything for the Audition?
No! If your daughter would like to come prepared with her own song to sing independently, she may.

Where Does the Audition Take Place?
Auditions will be held on the St. Cloud State Campus in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) on the lower level in room 140. Most campus lots are open for parking on Saturdays (O Lot is recommended for proximity to the PAC). The campus parking ramp is recommended for weekday parking, particularly before 5pm. After 5pm, street parking opens. Please read all parking signs carefully, as the Cantabile Choir Program is not responsible for any tickets received while on campus.

What If the Scheduled Audition Dates Do Not Work For My Schedule?
We do our best to provide multiple opportunities for interested girls to audition. Should special circumstances not allow for any of the audition times to be met, the Cantabile staff can make arrangements with individuals to audition another time.

What If I Need To Change My Scheduled Audition Time?
If you need to change your audition time, please contact the director prior to the audition. Should you have special circumstances arise and miss your audition time, please contact the director to schedule another audition time.

When Will My Daughter Find Out If She Made the Choir?
Letters will be mailed to all girls who auditioned notifying whether or not they were accepted into the choir. Letters will be sent out to be received by the first week of July. Should your daughter be accepted into the choir, registration and season materials will accompany the letter.

Mission

The Cantabile Girls Choir Program, which is sponsored by the SCSU Music Department PreparatoryProgram, offers two choral opportunities for young girls in Central Minnesota. The Choristers choir is for girls in grades 4-6 and Cantabile for girls in grades 6-9.

The mission of the choir program is to provide a rich and varied choral experience for talented young women that will challenge, edify, and enrich the choir and its audiences, and provide opportunities to grow not only musically, but socially and academically as well, through the study and performance of quality choral literature.

Jane Oxton Tuition Scholarship

The Jane Oxton Scholarship Fund was established in the fall of 2010 in honor of Cantabile's founding director. When Mrs. Oxton first established the choir, it was a priority for her to include girls from a wide range of economic backgrounds to share in an exceptional choral opportunity for young girls throughout Central Minnesota. With Jane's vidion of including a scholarship option for those in need of financial assistance, a number of girls were given the chance to be involved in a group which they otherwise may not have been able because of financial constraints. The Cantabile Girls' Choir continues with this opportunity by offering partial tuition scholarships available to Cantabile and Chorister members, based on financial need and application evaluation.

Her Story, Her Song2011 Her Story, Her Song

Her Story, Her Song is an annual musical offering in which the Women's Choir, Cantabile Girls' Choir, and music faculty honor the female experience in song, word and action. This musical event has evolved from six years of collaboration and friendship among women faculty members in the Department of Music. It offers rich opportunities for teaching and learning, provides excellent mentoring models, and creates awareness of diverse experiences.
