Are there any placement test requirements for entry level courses? If so, what are they?
Placement testing is required for admission to MATH 070, 072, 111, 112, 113, 115, 193, 196, 211, and 221. Students who did not take placement tests at new student registration are urged to report to the Mathematics Department Office located in the Engineering and Computing Center - 139, for placement advice before enrolling in their first math course.
Is it possible to satisfy the CORE 3 requirement without taking Math 193?
A student may substitute Math 111, 112, 115, 196, 211, or 222 to fulfill the CORE 3 requirement. Students wishing to test out of Math 193 should meet with the Department Chair in the Mathematics Department Office located in the Engineering and Computing Center - 139.
What is the minimum grade that I can get in MATH 221 that will allow me to take MATH 222? Do I need a certain minimum grade in MATH 193 to take MATH 330?
Because it is essential for students enrolling in a mathematics class have the prerequisite skills needed for success in that class, the Department of Mathematics requires a minimum grade of "C-" in all specifically listed departmental prerequisite courses. What are the necessary background skills for entering mathematics majors?
Students planning to major in either mathematics or statistics must have strong aptitude in mathematics and are encouraged to take MATH 221 as soon as possible. They are expected to have learned advanced algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus mathematics in high school or have completed MATH 112 and 113 (or Math 115) with a grade of "C-" or better.
Do I need department approval of elective courses for my mathematics program?
All major and minor programs in mathematics must be approved by the Mathematics Department before a student may be accepted into that program. Upper division electives are offered on an irregular basis. Students should plan their programs with their advisers well in advance of their intent to enroll in such courses.
How do I gain entry into a mathematics major?
Prospective majors are eligible to apply for admission to major programs in mathematics either when a) MATH 221 has been completed with a grade of "B" or better or b) Math 221, 222, and 9 additional credits have been completed. All students must earn a minimum GPA of 2.40 in all program courses before being accepted into a mathematics major. Students are urged to apply for admission to their major as soon as they become eligible.
What are the minimum grade point requirements for all math majors and minors?
A student who fails or withdraws from 3 or more mathematics classes may be denied entry into a mathematics major or minor. A student who fails or withdraws from 5 or more mathematics classes may be dropped from a mathematics major or minor. A GPA of 2.25 is required for all major and minor programs for graduation.
