Student Organizations

The department offers a wide variety of professional organizations in which students are encouraged to actively participate.

Students planning on majoring in mass communicatoins are encouraged to join one or more of the following student media organizations. For further information on meetings times, membership applications, etc., contact:

Advertising Federation of SCSU (AdFed)

Description: The purpose of the Advertising Federation is to inform and prepare students for the "real" ad world. Activities that we do include, but are not limited to, National Student Ad Competition, Ads Plus, tours of agencies and other related businesses, guest speakers, and traveling to New York and Chicago for conventions. We afford students the opportunity to gain knowledge of the business world, make connections, meet friends, and become better educated on their career choices.

KVSC-FM (University Radio Station)

Description: SCSU’s educational, student-operated radio station. KVSC plays a diverse mix of alternative and progressive music along with eight daily newscasts and live play-by-play of SCSU sports. Any student can complete the free training process to learn how to be on the air. All students are welcome to participate. You must complete a step-by-step training process and successfully pass the training test. Each spring, students apply for director positions, such as programming, music, marketing, news, sports, production, engineering, training, etc. (for the next school year). KVSC is on the air 24 hours a day with volunteer announcers. We often play music live at campus events, host an annual 50 hour trivia contest in February, produce weekly live music programming, and are active in campus and community events.

Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)

Description: This organization is a student affiliation of the professional PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) and is sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of PRSA. Students are encouraged to join as early in their academic career as possible in order to maximize their experiences. PRSSA members attend national conferences in the fall (last year in New Orleans, next year in NYC), participate in Pro-Am Day where they are matched with a PRSA member for a day, listen to speakers and professionals from the field, tour various types of PR offices, enjoy many social activities and participate in the annual Bateman Case Competition. Membership in PRSSA allows graduates to join PRSA right after college as associate members. Leadership skills and terrific networking are available as well as many opportunities for projects that land on a resume.

University Chronicle (Campus Newspaper)

Description: The University Chronicle’s purpose is to chronicle the news and issues that apply to SCSU students. The Chronicle which publishes twice a week has no criteria for membership. The newspaper provides students an opportunity to enhance their college experience through hands-on learning.

University TeleVision System (UTVS)

Description: UTVS exists to provide the highest quality programming possible to SCSU and the St. Cloud Community. UTVS reaches over 70,000 people in the St. Cloud area and serves as an educational facility where students learn how to produce high quality television programming. Any student attending SCSU is eligible to be a UTVS staff member.

Society of Prefessional Journalists (SPJ)

Description: The purpose of SPJ is to promote professionalism, ethics, diversity, education, and the 1st Amendment Vigilance on journalists. Membership is open to undergraduates majoring in print or broadcast journalism, photojournalism or public relations. We will sponsor activities such as the 1st Amendment Forum, diversity speakers, and public service through professional contacts and workshops.
