Company Overview:We believe everyone deserves a safe, decent, affordable place to call home and that homelessness is preventable and solvable. Many factors may cause homelessness including, but not limited to: job loss, health crisis, mismatch between income and housing costs, family violence, or a transition from an institutional setting back into the community. The Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless exists to ensure the community supports are in place to prevent and address the root causes of homelessness. We achieve our mission and vision through advocacy, technical assistance, and building public awareness. Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless is uniquely positioned as the hub of a statewide network of 150 homeless service providers and other concerned individuals and organizations across Minnesota. MCH has been the voice of people experiencing homelessness and service providers in state and federal policy decision-making since 1984.
Responsibilities:Project description and specific duties: • Plan events on campus for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week in November • Write letters to the editor to local news outlets about homelessness in Minnesota • Contact state legislators to discuss homelessness in Minnesota What students will gain from this experience: • Learn about homelessness and how it affects our state • Planning and organizational skills • Build contacts with people working in local news outlets • Ability to contact and communicate with legislators Qualifications/skills: • Basic computer skills: familiarity with social networking sites, Microsoft Office, navigating websites, etc. • Ability to work independently • Good writing and communication skills Open and willing to suspend judgment and preconceived stereotypes/assumptions Shift information: • The intern will work from his or her home, but will have regular contact with the intern supervisor, Caitlin Hozeny. Hours will range from 2-5 hours per week. • Fall and Spring internships are available.
