Since 1997, Department of Mass Communication students have had the unique opportunity to take their learning far beyond the walls of Stewart Hall to Poland, where they get a first-hand education in media in a post-communist country, the horrors of the Holocaust and more. Professor Peter Przytula, a native of Poland, leads the annual Poland program, which is like a compressed study-abroad program. Students can earn three to six credits while spending nearly three weeks immersed in Polish history, culture, media and modern life.
Much of each group’s time is spent in Lodz, Professor Przytula’s home town. Professor Przytula orchestrates visits to newspapers, television stations and public relations and advertising agencies to give students an up-close look at international communications in a post-Communist country. These are invaluable experiences in our increasingly global culture.
Profesor Przytula also sets up sightseeing tours to cities such as Warsaw and Krakow and arranges opportunities for St. Cloud State students to socialize with their Polish counterparts. However, of all the incredible experiences the Poland program offers, the Holocaust component leaves the strongest impression. The students tour internment camps and learn about the horrors from personal sessions with survivors.
The Poland program adds an international component to learning that’s critical in today’s market and creates indelible memories for our students.
