International StudentsVideo ProfileStudents from across the world come to St. Cloud State University for its exceptional education. The Department of Mass Communications sees our international mix of students as an opportunity to enhance our classroom discussions, broaden perspectives and explore media-related issues from a global viewpoint. The department also shares that global media perspective with campus. Professor Lisa Heinrich and some of our graduate students have presented three Student-to-Student Global Roundtable discussions on campus. Professor Heinrich and her students decided to host the first roundtable in fall 2006, when they realized their Ethics and Critical Analysis of Media graduate class included 15 students representing nine countries and five continents. “I thought it would be great to somehow share this with the rest of the university,” she said. “You just can't get more global than this, I don't think, on our campus,” Heinrich said. “Plus, it is a relatively small class which means everyone has a chance to contribute to the discussions. We all learn so much, including me.” The roundtables have drawn large audiences and given the campus community an opportunity to learn about media in different countries and the portrayal of Americans abroad. “I was amazed and how much I learned in a short hour about media all around the world,” Heinrich said. “I hope the experience built bridges-that U.S. students could see the international students as people like themselves, while learning a bit about the world."
