Mass CommunicationsMass Communications News Well-known alumni journalists come back to campusThursday, March 5, 2009 ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Department of Mass Communications at St. Cloud State University prepares students for work in various fields of mass media. Recently, the SCSU Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) brought back some of those alumni to share their experiences in the professional world. On March 3 students and faculty had the opportunity to hear successful, well-known professional alumni talk about their careers, challenges they face, industry trends, how new media has affected their jobs and how students can prepare for their careers. The alumni answered questions from the audience and held a meet-and-greet session afterwards, allowing students to talk one-on-one with the speakers. The panelists of alum represented newspapers, radio stations and TV stations from the St. Cloud area and the Twin Cities. Six of the eight panelists were graduates of St. Cloud State. The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry through the daily work of its nearly 10,000 members; works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through its advocacy efforts.
