Congratulations to UTVS and the Mass Communications Department for winning a record 32 awards this year for its TV news, sports, and public affairs programming! UTVS is the Mass Comm Department’s student-run TV station and the national awards are especially significant because it competed with many much larger schools and won. UTVS News took home an Emmy from the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the second time. They won the last Emmy for "Best College Newscast in the Nation" in 2007. UTVS Sports (Husky Productions) also won big, taking 1st Place for "Best TV Sports Event Production in the Nation" in the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) national competition. Last year a UTVS Sports production won the prestigious “Best of Festival” award at BEA, which means it beat out over 900 other productions and won in ALL the competition categories, not just sports.
UTVS Advisor and Mass Communications Department Chair Mark Mills said "This just shows what a lot of hard work and dedication can accomplish, especially with the news awards. We are the only university I know of that does three full 30 minute newscasts a day, five days a week and we were competing with some schools that do one newscast a week." Professor Mills also cited the other UTVS Advisor and Husky Productions Chief Engineer, Derrick Silvestri, for his "incredible expertise, dedication, and hard work" and said he was a big reason they won so many awards for both news and sports. Among the other major awards they won are:
