Mission
The mission of the Department of Mass Communications is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become socially responsible, professionally successful mass media communicators.
To achieve the mission the program provides:
- A major and minor curriculum grounded in the liberal arts and sciences that includes core instruction in principles of mass media and society with appropriate professional training in the practices and techniques of the mass media institutions and industries;
- A well-qualified faculty committed to teaching, scholarship and creative productivity germane to the discipline;
- A program with a solid reputation for excellence in providing professional education and service to the region and state of Minnesota;
- An institutional ethos that promotes fairness, equality, diversity and ethical practice in all aspects of the departmental culture.
National accreditation
Accreditation by ACEJMC distinguishes St. Cloud State's Department of Mass Communications is one of the Midwest's top programs.
The graduate program is Minnesota's only ACEJMC-accredited program, and the undergraduate program is one of only two in the state.
What, exactly, does ACEJMC accreditation mean?
ACEJMC is the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, which evaluates professional journalism and mass communications programs in colleges and universities.
Every six years, St. Cloud State's department conducts a self-assessment and is visited by an accreditation team for evaluation in nine different areas, including
- Curriculum and instruction
- Diversity and inclusiveness
- Resources, facilities and equipment
- Student services
The department's ACEJMC accreditation assures our students they are getting an outstanding education. It also has earned the department respect in the media industry, where our students have a reputation for being well-trained, well-educated and ready to excel professionally.
