Mark Mills
Mark is the Chair of the Mass Communications
Department and teaches Broadcast Journalism. He also advises the award-winning
St. Cloud State cable TV station UTVS.
He has spent the
last few years upgrading the television facility as we grow into the digital
age and continues in that effort today. He is very proud of what UTVS
has accomplished as it has grown far beyond a college TV station.
The
station has won numerous regional honors and a host of national awards
in competition with universities three times its size. In the last two years, the news department
has particularly excelled, winning several national awards including First Place Emmys in 2007 and 2008 from the American Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences for best college newscast in the nation.
Mark has produced three documentaries on
the developing news media in South Korea, Eastern Europe and Central America,
and he is now working on a fourth on journalism in Peru. He is also
working on his second book. A couple of years ago his first novel, To Protect the Innocent was
published. It was a work of fiction, but used real-life facts and
figures to tell the true story of pedophilia in America. His next book
concerns the war in Iraq and it is also based on actual events and issues.
Mark’s famous quote is “you can’t teach it if
you haven’t done it.” He has done it as a professional
broadcast journalist for 13 years before coming to St. Cloud State. He
started out as a TV journalist in four local markets around the country and
ended up as a Washington D.C. correspondent and bureau chief covering Capitol
Hill and the White House. He spent his last few years in Washington
reporting news from different parts of the world.
Mark is currently working on developing the overall department and all of its
sequences to make it the best it can be. In particular,
he is moving the entire department into the digital age with all of its media
convergence and new media web elements. His main goal is to develop
the St. Cloud State Center for Media Excellence, which will encompass all
sequences: Print and Broadcast Journalism, Advertising, and Public
Relations.
