Broadcasting

The Broadcasting Sequence in the Department of Mass Communications at SCSU offers three emphases.

  • Television Production
  • Television Journalism
  • Radio

Television production

Television production explores and examines the history, theory, aesthetics, ethics, methods and practices of modern television production. Curriculum ranges from the film roots of television production, to the planning and production of television news, sports, documentary, public affairs and entertainment programs.

Course content includes professional management of the television production process from concept through program distribution. Professional writing and production skills are emphasized throughout the television production process. Students apply what they learn to write and produce various forms of television. The entire production process at SCSU, from planning, through scripting, acquisition, production and editing to distribution, uses digital platforms.

Television Journalism

Television Journalism focuses on modern television news writing and production, the newsroom environment, and historic journalistic traditions, imperatives, ethics, and production. Course content emphasizes critical knowledge about news reporting, writing, photography and editing, through on-air production, sports reporting and news anchoring. Students apply what they learn to write, report, shoot, edit and present a daily, professional television news show featuring reports of all kinds. News production uses analog and digital platforms, from news report writing, shooting and editing, through show rundowns, to on-air production and news presentation.

Television production and journalism students operate, manage and staff all production at UTVS (www.UTVS.com), a 24/7 television station providing television services to the SCSU community and over 80,000 regional cable television subscribers.

Radio

Radio provides students with knowledge of history, and the development of modern radio broadcasting, from news, sports and entertainment programming to community and alternative radio services. Curriculum offers students radio writing and audio production skills development as they produce radio. Students develop and create modern radio programming of all kinds in digital audio production formats, and in live on-air work, including live simulcast radio/television music and performance productions.

Radio students staff and operate KVSC, 88.1 FM (www.KVSC.org) located at SCSU. KVSC is a broadcast and webcast community-supported alternative radio station, featuring music and other programming alternatives to commercial radio. Students gain experience in all aspects of radio station operation. Historic and contemporary programming is written, produced and featured by students.
