Request for a Change of Visa Status

 

Application Procedures

  1. Complete all sections of the application packet, which includes the following:
    • Request for a Change of Visa Status Form
    • Program Completion Plan Form
    • Cover Letter
      • In this letter, please explain why you need a Change of Status
    • Original, signed Form I-539
      • USCIS uses special scanners to read forms submitted during immigration application processes.
        • Handwritten forms often result in errors as these scanners are not able to read them accurately. In order to reduce the occurrence of errors, which may result delays in processing and adjudication of your Change of Status, we now require that you download form I-539, type in the required information, print out the form, and sign using blue ink.
        • Please note that the scanners will not read information that is greyed out, highlighted, or corrected using correction fluid or tape.
    • Original, signed Form G-1145

    • Copy of financial support documents
      • The student must prove sufficient funding is available to cover one year of costs (Information on the cost of attendance can be found at: http://www.stcloudstate.edu/internationaladmissions/costs/default.asp
      • Documents must adhere to the following:
        • Be originals, photocopies, scanned copies or faxed documents printed on bank letterhead and certified with the bank’s stamp or seal; we reserve the right to verify authenticity
        • Be dated within six months of today’s date
        • If financial support will be provided by anyone other than the student, the sponsor must submit a letter in English indicating his/her willingness to support the student
        • All documents must be written In English; if English is not the language in which the bank documents are issued, the bank documents must be accompanied by a certified, literal English translation.
    • New I-20 for Initial Attendance – Change of Status Requested (signed in blue ink)
    • SEVIS I-901 fee: $200 (cost subject to change without notice)
    • Copies of current I-94 card (front and back or print out)
      • If you currently hold an F-2, H-4, J-2 visa please also include the copies of your principle visa holder’s I-94 card or print out
    • COLOR Copy of valid passport (biographical and extension pages)
      • If you currently hold an F-2, H-4, J-2 visa please also include a COLOR copy of your principle visa holder’s passport pages
    • COLOR Copy of most recent current immigration status documents (visa stamp, I-20, DS-2019, I-797, etc.)
      • If you currently hold an F-2, H-4, J-2 visa please also include a COLOR copy of your principle visa holder’s current immigration status documents (visa stamp, I-20, DS-2019, I-797, etc.)
    • Filing fee: $290 (cost subject to change without notice)
      • Money order is recommended, but you may use a personal check.
      • Make payable to “U.S. Department of Homeland Security”
    • Waiver of foreign residence requirement, if the change of status is from J-1/J-2 visa status
  2. The student should drop off or mail their application packet to the Center for International Studies for review.

  3. An advisor in the Center for International Studies will:
    • Review the application packet
    • Request the change of status in SEVIS
    • Email the student to notify them that their application packet has been processed
  4. The student should return to the Center for International Studies to:
    • Sign (in blue ink) two sets of their new I-20 (one original to keep and one original to submit to USCIS)
    • The Center for International Studies will mail the application packet to USCIS
  5. If the student cannot return to the Center for International Studies:
    • The Center for International Studies will mail the application packet to the student
    • The student must then:
      • Sign (in blue ink)two sets of their new I-20 (one original to keep and one original to submit to USCIS)
      • Mail the entire application packet to USCIS
