Social Security Number (SSN)

Application Procedures

  1. Applicant needs to complete the Application for a Social Security Card
  2. Applicant needs to submit the application in addition to supporting documentation to the Social Security Administration Office. 
  3. The application form is available online at www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf , or at the local Social Security Administration Office.
  4. Additional documentation that is required for application is based upon your nonimmigrant status in the U.S.  Please reference the chart below for the specific documentation you must bring with you to the Social Security Administration Office.

Important Points to Remember

Students and Scholars will need to:

    1. Wait at least 14 days after arriving in the U.S. to apply for a SSN or your application will be delayed
    2. Consult with the CIS office prior to applying for a SSN
    3. Be sure to bring their employment documentation
    4. Make sure the address used on the SSN application is valid and that their name is on the mailbox

Note:

  • Citizens of Canada do NOT need a U.S. visa to apply for a SSN
  • F-2 visa holders are NOT eligible to apply for a SSN

  • Traveling using the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) Bus:

  • Take the University from the Miller Library
  • Take the North side from the Greyhound Bus Stand
  • Bus Stop: 36th Avenue North
  • If you are a first time traveler, please ask the driver to stop at the Social Security Office for you.  Be sure to note where you should get back on the bus after your appointment.
