Answers to Common Questions About Student Life Questions
1. Is it
possible for me to get SCSU residency?
If you are here in the United States temporarily (i.e. on
a student visa) then you are not eligible to establish residency.
Students in other visa statuses may be eligible. For
more information see the Office of Records and Registration.
2. Are international students
allowed to work?
This depends on the type of visa you hold. Both F1 and J1
students are allowed to work on campus on a part-time basis
(20 hours/week or less) while school is in session and full-time
during the breaks, as long as you maintain a nonimmigrant
status. F1 and J1 students can work off campus under limited
situations, as long as the work they are doing is considered
an integral part of their degree program. You need to request
a work permit letter from the Center
for International Studies before seeking employment.
3.
How do I get in touch with other students from my country?
There are many student groups here on campus. Click
here for a list of Cultural organizations.
Answers to Common Questions About Finances
1. Are there
any scholarships for international students?
Yes. The Academic
& Cultural Sharing Scholarship is available for F-1
students.
If you are an athlete and plan to play on an NCAA Division
I team, you may qualify for an athletic scholarship. Contact
the athletic department for more information. If you are a
musician, you may qualify also.
Graduate Students should check with their respective departments
about teaching/graduate assistantships (TA/GA). TAs/GA's generally
get a partial tuition waiver and a stipend every month that
is usually sufficient to cover their educational costs.
