Preparing to Travel

  • Have you made your travel arrangements and airline reservations?

You will be traveling at a very busy time of year in the United States, so please make your reservations as soon as possible. Allow time to arrive on campus before orientation begins to give your body time to adjust to your new surroundings.

  • Have you reviewed the information from SCSU about how to get from the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport to SCSU? If not, click on the link below to access this information.

Transportation options from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport to SCSU

  • Have you confirmed your airline reservations 72 hours before departure?

International travel regulations require you to do so and doing so may alert you to any flight schedule changes.

  • Do you have name and address labels on the inside and outside of all your luggage?

Use your SCSU address, as this will facilitate finding your bags should they be misplaced by the airlines during travel. Identification tags are available from the airlines.

If you do not have a SCSU address, please use the following address:

    Your name
    Center for International Studies
    St. Cloud State University
    720 4th Avenue South
    St. Cloud, MN 56301
    USA

  • Have you practiced packing your luggage in advance of your departure?

This will give you an idea of what and how much you can take. Check with the airlines regarding their luggage size, number and weight policy. Excess baggage sent by sea takes 6 weeks to 6 months to arrive, depending on where it is sent from; check with your local shipper.

  • Can you carry your own luggage for at least one-half kilometer or a quarter of a mile?

If not, you may want to consider purchasing a collapsible luggage cart to assist you.

  • Do you have personal items packed in your carry-on bag in case your luggage is lost or delayed?

Check with the airlines concerning the size, weight and content restrictions for a carry-on bag. Here are a few suggestions for items to include in your carry-on bag:

    • change of clothing
    • book or magazine
    • snacks
    • toothbrush & toothpaste
    • brush or comb
    • medications - in their original containers
  • Did you check one last time to make sure you have all your important documents?

At a minimum you should have the following documents. Some countries will require additional documents.

    • I-20 or DS2019 from SCSU
    • passport
    • visa
    • airline ticket(s)
  • Small packages may be temporarily sent in your name to the Center for International Studies. We have limited space and can hold your packages for only a brief time.
