Undergraduate Certificate


This certificate complements other majors, especially those in education, fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and business. Applicants planning to work toward the Instructional Technology Certificate must meet with an adviser in the Information Media Department.

 

School of Education: Computer Competency Test

Education majors ARE required to demonstrate computer competency before admission to IM 421 or 422/522 courses. This is not a course equivalency exam and no credit is given. There is no cost to take the test.

 

 

Graduate Programs

Track I: Information Technologies

Students develop the competencies that lead to careers as a technology integration specialists and instructional designers in schools, businesses, and government agencies or as technology coordinators and curriculum designers in an educational setting. This track also provides an opportunity for teachers to enhance classroom instruction through technology integration to become more efficient users of computers and other technologies in the classroom setting.

Track II: Educational Media

Incorporates all of the competency requirements leading to Minnesota licensure as a school library media specialist. It is specifically structured for people pursuing careers in the public schools. The curriculum includes courses in library/media management, technological applications for teaching and learning, and instructional development and production. The program builds on basic skills and competencies required for teacher licensure. Course work leading to school library media specialist licensure may be completed without completing a master’s degree.

Track III: Instructional Design & Training

Designed for people interested in careers in human performance technology and training management in business, industrial, governmental and health fields. The course work prepares individuals with such competencies as problem analysis, program development, resource management, and personnel/performance evaluation. Students will develop specific skills for positions in training/human resources development and performance analysis.

 

Graduate Certificate Programs

Design for E-Learning Certificate

This certificate is designed for persons interested in increasing their use of distributed learning technologies in schools, business, government, and industry settings. The certificate complements other majors, especially those in education. May also be used as continuing education to upgrade skills. Applicants planning to work toward the Design for E-Learning Certificate should meet with a graduate adviser in the Information Media.

Instructional Technology Certificate

The certificate program teach skills vital to many careers such as computers and technology, staff training, designing multimedia presentations, producing video, and information gathering and presenting. Education majors who earn the Instructional Technology Certificate are recognized as skilled users of technology and teachers who effectively integrate technology into their classrooms. Other majors find value in the hands-on technology opportunities in the certificate program. Your transcript will read "Instructional Technology Certificate" which will tell employers you are fluent in the use of computer-related technologies.

Library Media Specialist Certificate

The graduate Library Media Specialist (LMS) Certificate is designed to provide an academic credential for those individuals not seeking a Master's degree but who are pursuing licensure as a library media specialist. To receive an LMS Certificate, students must complete:

IM 620 The School Library Media Program - 2 credits
IM 628 Administration of Media - 3 credits and

10 additional credits selected from the series of courses approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching for licensure of library media specialists.

To qualify for Minnesota licensure as a School Library Media Specialist candidates must complete any other course work necessary to meet the competencies specified in State of Minnesota Rule 8710.2000 and 8710.4550 and pass the applicable Praxis tests.

Admission Requirements Specific to the Certificate

Certificate applicants must submit a SCSU Graduate Admission Application along with the admission fee.

Students must meet with the licensure adviser in the Information Media Department to plan the sequence of courses required and complete a certificate program of study form indicating the appropriate courses for licensure.

Certificate applicants are not required to take the GRE for admission.

Additional Requirements Specific to the Certificate

Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0; no grade less than B- is accepted for certificate courses.

At the completion of 8 credits, students must successfully complete a review of LMS skills and dispositions to determine licensure progress.

At the completion of the certificate courses, students must participate in an exit interview with at least three members of the faculty.

School Library Media Licensure

The School Library Media Licensure course sequence offered by the Information Media Department at St. Cloud State University incorporates all of the competency requirements leading to a school library media specialist license in Minnesota. It is specifically structured for people pursuing a career in the public schools as a librarian. The curriculum includes courses in library/media management, technological applications for teaching and learning, and instructional development and production. The course work builds on basic skills and competencies required for teacher licensure. The course work leading to a school library media specialist license may be completed without completing a master’s degree.
