Michael Schwartz, Ph.D., Director
Dr. Schwartz became the director of the IEC in August 2012. Michael has been involved with international student education for over 25 years. He began teaching EFL in Taiwan in the 1980s and earned his MA-TESL in 1989. In 2012, he earned his Ph.D. in Educational Linguistics from the University of New Mexico-Albuquerque. Before coming to St. Cloud, Michael taught intensive English in several different IEPs in the United States and abroad. Dr. Schwartz is also a member of the MA-TESL faculty where he teaches courses in Discourse Analysis and World Englishes. His research interests include translingualism, Second Language Writing, Second Language Acquisition, Discourse Analysis, and World Englishes. Michael has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and Latin America. In his free time, Michael enjoys cooking, bicycling, camping, hiking, golfing, and traveling.
John Grether, IEC Coordinator
John has been working in the IEC since the program started in the late 1990s. In addition to holding a Master’s degree in TESL he is also a licensed Elementary teacher. John teaches Technology Lab and American Culture in the IEC and teaches English 291 and English 463 at SCSU. He enjoys exposing his students to traditional Minnesota activities and takes them canoeing down the Mississippi river, ice skating at the National Hockey Center and downhill skiing at Powder Ridge ski area.
Anne Fischhaber, Office Manager
Rhoda Fagerland, Full-time non-probationary teacher
Rhoda teaches full-time in the Intensive English Center. Prior to earning her Master’s Degree in TESL from St. Cloud State, she taught EFT in Asia for 10 years. She loves developing innovative ways to help her students improve their English skills.
Jason grew up in Cottage Grove Minnesota, and earned his BA in international relations and Spanish from Minnesota State University Mankato. He has taught EFL in Ecuador, Colombia, and China. He is currently working on his MA in TESOL at SCSU.
Aly grew up in Elk River, Minnesota and received her BA in Hispanic Studies and Psychology from the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. She has spent several years coaching high school tennis in both central Minnesota and in the Duluth area. Volunteering at an English academy in Viña del Mar, Chile in 2010, peaked her interest in teaching. Aly is now in her second semester of the M.A. TESL program at St. Cloud State and teaching with the IEC.
Lydia Dieterich grew up in Washington State, and received her B.A.s in Fine Arts and Anthropology from Washington State University. She has taught ESL in Mie-ken, Japan to students from 1.5 - 91 years old. For the past two years, she has worked as a Reading Tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps. In her spare time, she likes learning about cultures, food, and many types of arts & crafts.
Amanda hails from near Madison, WI. She earned her BA from Carleton College in 2009, majoring in Psychology with minors in Educational Studies and Spanish. During her undergraduate work she studied abroad in Spain and earned her Minnesota K-12 World Languages and Cultures teaching license. After college Amanda taught Spanish at New Prague High School for four years. Currently she is working towards her MA degree in TESL from SCSU and teaching in the IEC. In her spare time Amanda enjoys traveling, reading novels, drinking coffee, attending concerts, and spending time with her friends, family, and cat.
Julia Fajardo holds a Master's degree in TESOL from St. Cloud State University, and a Bachelor's Degree from Western State Colorado University. She has been teaching ESL for 20 years,in both the United States and abroad, and has taught students at every level. She has traveled extensively, and has participated in numerous learning and teaching activities and has participated in two Fulbright programs in Austria and Japan. She has special training in Reading Education and enjoys learning about Intercultural Communication.
Robert is grateful to be involved in a profession which strives to help people achieve their dreams of learning English. At the core of this gratitude is his personal realization that teaching someone a language can be such a powerful and meaningful experience for everyone involved, and can truly change lives. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and has a B.A. in Spanish Language. He has previously taught in Chile and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in TESL at SCSU.
Racha completed an undergraduate double-degree in English Literature and Secondary Education (minors Arabic and ESL) from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. During her undergraduate study she co-founded a pioneering language program entitled Fa’lam: Understanding Arabic through Play, which was aimed at improving students’ second language acquisition and appreciation of the Arabic language through augmenting teacher instruction to reflect current and effective second-language teaching methodologies. Before joining St Cloud State’s IEC in the Fall of 2013, Racha worked at the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus teaching ESL to international students. She simultaneously earned a Master in Educational Studies with Distinction from the University of Newcastle, Australia. Racha’s research interests include pedagogy, second-language acquisition, student-centered learning and student-directed learning.
Sung A Gang Kim (Christina)
Sung-A's parents immigrated to Spain and she was born and raised there. She went to an American school in Spain and completed her Bachelor's degree in Music Education at the Complutense University of Madrid. After her graduation in 2011, she went abroad to Korea to teach English at a Middle and High School, where she started studying for TESL at the Busan University of Foreign Studies. Currently she is working at the Intensive English Center at St. Cloud State University and finishing her her Tesl M.A. Degree.
Jonathan Kohan received his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Alabama. After graduation he worked as a substitute teacher in Alabama and South Dakota, where he also volunteered as an ESL teacher at a refugee and immigration center. He is going back to school to obtain his MA in TESL and a license to teach English as a second language in Public Schools.
Ivana has been teaching in the IEC since Fall 2012. She has completed a B.S. in International Relations, with a specialization in Diplomacy, and a B.A. in Business English. After having spent two semesters at SCSU as an exchange student through a U.S. State Department scholarship, she decided to pursue a degree in TESL. Ivana tutored at the Mediterranean University for two semesters. In addition, she assisted a few professors in organizing the classroom, planning the lessons, developing the curriculum, etc.
Apart from the teaching and graduate school responsibilities, Ivana is involved in a lot of cultural events, and she is very passionate in presenting her home country, Montenegro.
Wen (Elizabeth) Meng
Wen (Elizabeth) Meng is now in the last semester of her TESL MA program at SCSU. She is from Xi’an, China. Earned her BA in English Literature back in China in 2008, she came to the US right after that to pursue her Master’s Degree. Wen has been teaching as a Teaching Assistant in the IEC since she started her MA program. She taught in the IEC for one Spring semester, two Fall semesters, and a summer program. Courses she had taught are Listening and Speaking, Vocabulary, Conversation, Reading and Writing, and Spelling. She enjoys reading, cooking, talking with her students and travelling in her free time.
Casey O’Donnell grew up in Pine City, Minnesota. He attended school at Hamline University where he studied English literature. For two and a half years, he taught EFL in Korean private schools. Last year, he worked at St. Cloud State University in the College ESL program for the fall and spring semesters. He has taught in the IEC since the summer of 2013.
Amanda Olson graduated from St. Cloud State University with a BA in Communication Arts and Literature Education. She has worked in the St. Cloud School District with ESL students and decided that she has a passion for teaching English to non native speakers. She is currently working on her MA in TESOL.
Kali Pelham is originally from Oregon. She graduated with an M.A.in TESL from St. Cloud State in 2012 after experience teaching in K-12 public schools and teaching college level ESL as a graduate student. She has taught various levels of listening and speaking and college ESL reading and writing. Other courses taught include conversation, spelling and oral presentation. She enjoys teaching all levels of English as a second language and is grateful for the opportunity to teach students from countries around the world.
Mohammad Anisur Rahman (Anis)
Mohammad Anisur Rahman (Anis) has earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in English Literature from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is currently pursuing his second Master’s degree in TESL at St.Cloud State University. He completed Professional Development Course by Cambridge Assessment Group (U.K). He has worked as a faculty of English at school and university level in Bangladesh for 4 years. He has been teaching at IEC since Fall 2012. His area of interest includes second language acquisition, testing and evaluation, World Englishes and ESL and culture.
Kristen grew up in N.Y. and graduated from Taylor University, IN, with a K-12 license in Art and Music Education. She taught Art in schools for 5 years in MN and 5 years in Venezuela. She then switched to teaching English - in Venezuela, Mexico and Jordan – for 17 years. Her experience has mostly been in personal and business communication, TOEFL iBT preparation, and intense private lessons. She speaks Spanish well, and Arabic a bit. She enjoys working with university students and other adults the most, loves God, language, making jewelry, playing the piano, and cats - and loves when MN is green (after 7 years in the desert)!
Peiwen Wang (Melanie)
Peiwen completed her Bachelor's degree in English at Nankai University and Binhai College, China. She is currently a TESL MA student at SCSU and teaches in the Intensive English Center. She has taught English in both English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language settings.
Holly Warzecha completed her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at St. Cloud State University, and then earned a Master’s degree in TESOL at the same institution. Following graduation she spent 3 years teaching in China and the past year in Indonesia as an English Language Fellow.
Warshani Himanshi Pilimatalawwe Wijeratne
Warshani completed her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, majoring in English Language, Literature and Theory and Practice. Currently a student of the MA TESL programme, she works at the IEC as a Teaching Assistant. She has been teaching English for more than six years, working as an instructor in English at the Intensive English Programme, at the University of Peradeniya and as a Consultant/Lecturer in English at the National Institute of Business Management, Sri Lanka.
Megan Wisbar received her B.A. from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls with her Bachelor’s Degree in TESOL. While at UWRF, Wisbar was a peer minister, ESL tutor, McNair Scholar, Dean’s List recipient, and University of Wisconsin’s Women of Color Award recipient for 2010. She taught English in South Korea for 3 years and spent 6 months learning Korean at Korea University. Currently, Wisbar is working towards her M.A. in TESOL with K-12 Licensure at St. Cloud State University while teaching classes in the IEC and volunteering at the Salvation Army.
Nix is the daughter of immigrant parents so has always felt a kinship with the international population. Prior to beginning her Master’s education, she taught English for 3 years with the Minnesota Literacy Council in Minneapolis and for six months in a rural village in Ghana.
Haoxuan received her TESL M.A. Degree August 2013 from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota; Bachelors of Law in China 2007 from Zhejiang Gongshang University. Haoxuan is currently teaching Reading and Writing of Level 3 in Intensive English Center.
Chengying Yang (Summer)
Teaching has been my career for almost 7 years. I have experience in teaching different age groups on IELTS, Corporate training, English corner and tutoring young students. I am good at teaching speaking and listening. I love teaching because teaching is never about teaching knowledge itself but to make differences into other people’s life.
Douchi Yang is originally from Wisconsin. She earned her BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2009 in Biology. After completing her undergraduate work, she moved to South Korea and began teaching with EPIK. She taught there for four years--one year in middle school and three years in elementary. It is there that she began pursuring her MA in TESOL at Woosong University. Douchi then transferred to St. Cloud State University in which she is currently finishing her MA in TESOL, pursuring a K-12 ESL licensure, and teaching in the IEC.
Jonghee Youn (Joey)
Joey Youn received his B.A. in English Langeuage Education from Korea University, Seoul and is currently pursuing his M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Langauge from SCSU. Since completing undergraduate study in the fall of 2001, he taught highschool students in the Korean public secondary school system. Joey’s areas of professional interest used to be exclusively in test preparation for college. Now he is working to expand his area to teaching English in more communicative settings. In his free time, Joey enjoys travel, watching movies, playing with his two kids and a dog, and exploring the many parks in Minnesota.
Cheng Yue (Pearl)
Pearl completed her Bachelor's degree in English translation and interpretation (English-Chinese Chinese- English) from Nankai University Binhai College, China. She is currently pursuing an M.A. in TESOL at St Cloud State University and is thrilled to be teaching for Intensive English Center. She has taught EFL and ESL for 1 year in China. Pearl’s areas of interests include ESL, phonology, Bilingualism and assessment. In her free time, she enjoys music, cooking, and studying languages. She also knows some Japanese and French.
Janette is currently enrolled in the MA TESL program at St. Cloud State University and on track for K-12 Licensure. She earned a BA English from the University of Yaounde-Cameroon in 1991, and an MA English from Bemidji State University in 2000. She has one year of teaching in an IEP in the United States, and was a Secondary School English and Literature teacher in Cameroon.
Robyn has worked in the IEC since 2007 and has taught students at every level. She has also taught and traveled with various summer groups in the IEC. She has a Bachelor's in Linguistics and a Master's in TESL, both from St. Cloud State University. In addition, she is a licensed K-12 teacher. She has traveled extensively and has taught in the Ivory Coast, Quebec, Ecuador, and most recently China. Her hobbies include camping, hiking, skiing, reading, and cooking.
