Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I enter the United States before the program start date?

You are allowed to enter the country up to 30 days before the start date of your program.

How will I get to St. Cloud?

The best option is to have someone you know in Minnesota bring you to campus, but if you don’t know anyone, we recommend taking a shuttle van from the airport to St. Cloud.  One company’s brochure is in the acceptance packet we send to you, but there are several other companies.  A taxi ride would be a more expensive option than a shuttle as it’s a 1-1.5 hour drive.

How can I pay the IEC Application fee?

You can pay it by bank check, international money order, or cash.  Someone in the US can also mail it to the IEC on behalf of the applicant.  Sorry, no credit card payments at this time.

How long does the application process take for an I-20?

Once we receive the completed IEC application plus all of the supporting documents (see application for items required), you will hear a response about an I-20 in approximately two (2) weeks.

Who applies to the IEC?

Anyone who is interested in becoming fluent (or just better) in English, which is typically a foreign-born person, anyone who applied but did not meet the University language requirements, or someone in the US on a tourist visa who wants to take recreational classes.  You may also enroll in the IEC part-time if you are a dependent of an F-1/J-1 student visa holder.

What do I need to send for my application?

Please see the application for more specifics, but please send the IEC application, fee, and supporting documents (education credentials, passport, and financials).

What about health insurance?

Health insurance is mandatory for all international students and the fee is included in the tuition amount.  Typically, IEC students will be enrolled in the insurance plan through SCSU, unless you have approved coverage through another source.

Where will I live?

You can choose to live in the St. Cloud State University dormitories (referred to as “on campus”) or off campus in another location (apartment, house, etc.).  A packet from SCSU Residential Life will be mailed in the acceptance packet for more information.

Where do IEC students come from?

All over the world! Each semester has students from different countries than the previous semester; typically we have students from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin/South America.

Will my original documents be returned to me after I apply?

Yes, all original documents are usually returned to the applicant, although if you are applying for SCSU in addition to the IEC, they may keep your transcript that was sent.
