Intensive English Center

Welcome to SCSU's Intensive English Center, the IEC.

The Intensive English Center (IEC) at Saint Cloud State University (SCSU) is an intensive English program (IEP) which began offering classes in the fall of 1997. It is designed to provide quality language instruction to international students who wish to improve their English language skills while learning about American culture and customs. Courses are offered at five levels from beginner to advanced and consist of 23 hours of instruction per week. The curriculum emphasizes the development of basic skills that are fundamental to academic success or professional advancement, such as reading, writing, grammar, listening comprehension and speaking. It also includes cultural orientation, oral presentation, pronunciation, discussion, and computer technology. Classes are taught by professionally trained instructors with advanced degrees in teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language.

A cultural program, social activities and guest lectures by SCSU professors and staff enable students to gain a greater understanding of US history, culture and academic life. Class sizes range from 6 to 12 students and every effort is made to provide students with individualized attention. Qualified IEC graduates may apply to undergraduate or graduate programs at SCSU. A satisfactory completion of the program may be used in place of TOEFL. Conditional admission to SCSU is also possible.

Factsheets about the Intensive English Center are available in Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese.
