Q. When can I enroll or increase my short term disability coverage (STD)?
A. You can apply for this coverage at any time during the year. You must complete a paper application for the optional coverage. The effective date will be the pay period coinciding with or following the approval date from the carrier.

Q. How do I calculate daily rate of pay for faculty?
A. Take base salary and divide by 168 duty days.

Q. How do I calculate daily rate of pay for MSUAASF and MnSCU Administrators?
A. Take base salary and divide by 261 duty days.

Q. What is the difference between Professional Improvement Funds and Professional Development Funds?
A. Professional Improvement Funds (PIF) are grants that are to be used for MSUAASF professional development activities. See Jean Duininck if you have questions.
Professional Development Funds are funds in each department which are set aside for employee professional development. Check with your department.

Q. When are unclassified employees eligible for supplemental retirement?
A. Employees are eligible for supplemental retirement if they are employed in an unclassified position as faculty, MSUAASF or MnSCU administrator and have completed two full-time years of unclassified service. Eligible employees will be enrolled on the July 1 following the completion of their two full-time years and will receive enrollment forms from Wells Fargo.

Q. If I am participating in the Annuitant Employment Program, how many credits can I teach in an academic year?
A. From the beginning of summer session through spring semester you must teach at least 8 credits and not more than 16 credits.

Q. What benefits do family members who live out of state and out of the service area of the plans receive?
A. Family members living out of the service area have emergency and urgent care benefits only out of the service area. Students’ permanent residence is that of the parent(s).

Q. What is the difference between classified and unclassified positions?

Classified employees are also known as “Civil Service Employees” and have classifications titles such as Account Clerk, Electrician, Office Administrative Specialist, etc. They are permanent full time, part time or intermittent employees and are paid hourly.

Unclassified employees are IFO, MnSCU Administrators and MSUAASF employees. It includes Professors, Deans, Vice Presidents or Student Services Directors and most positions are considered exempt.
