Program Details

Two Year Schedule

Length of Program: The program is designed for full-time students to finish in two years. Occasionally, highly motivated students with strong science backgrounds will finish in one and a half years. Part-time students usually finish in three to five years.

Curriculum: The curriculum is usually the same for all exercise science students in a given tract, with the exception of a few classes (Elective Courses) that can be tailored to strengthen the students in areas in which they may be deficient. For example, mechanical engineers who enter the biomechanics tract usually elect to take a human cadaver course in place of dynamics. Or a biologist entering the exercise physiology tract might elect to take a statistics course in place of advanced cell biology.

Special studies majors will take some of the core exercise science classes and supplement these with classes in their areas of interest from the list of Elective Courses.

The two year schedules listed at the bottom of this web page are examples of typical schedules for students majoring in biomechanics, exercise physiology and/or special studies. Click on each course number below to view course descriptions.

Finishing in Two Years: The courses are listed in a sequence that we think best prepares the students for their internship, comprehensive exam (exercise students only) and completion of their theses. Most students elect to intern during the summer following the first year of classes. The comprehensive exam is scheduled after completion of the first three semesters of course work. The content of these courses are an important part of the preparation for the comprehensive exam. While not on the schedule, first year students should scour the scientific literature for articles in preparation for selecting a thesis topic. To successfully complete a thesis during the second year, first year students are strongly encouraged to complete a draft of chapter one (review of literature) of their theses by the end of the first year of classes.
