Internship in Community Health
Selection of Internship Site
Students are to contact two prospective internship sites approximately two months in advance of the internship experience. The purpose of the contact is to assist the student in the selection of an internship site that is compatible with the student's objectives and career plans. The Community Health Internship Coordinator will assist students in identifying possible internship sites. Previous internship sites are on file in the HPERSS main office (HaH 327). All prospective Community Health Interns must have completed at least two-thirds of their Community Health major/minor in order to be eligible for the internship placement. Students must have at least 2.5 GPA overall and a 2.5 GPA in the Community Health Major/Minor to be eligible for the internship. An official transcript must be attached to the application.
Following a site selection, the student intern will complete the Internship Application form, which includes a listing of two possible internship sites.
Upon receipt of the completed Internship Application form the student has deemed appropriate for an internship placement, a personal letter is constructed by the prospective student intern to the agency requesting permission for an internship and to request a meeting and interview. The Community Health Internship Coordinator must approve all letters of inquiry.
A copy of the intern’s resume and two letters of recommendation should accompany the letter of inquiry. One letter of recommendation should be from the intern’s major advisor. The second letter should be from a faculty member, employer, or other person who is knowledgeable of the intern’s knowledge, skills, and disposition.
Upon notification of internship ready status, the student contacts the agency for an interview and site visit.
If the agency accepts the student intern and if the student agrees to intern with the agency, the remaining details are to be outlined and given to the Community Health Internship Coordinator.
The Internship Mentor must sign the Intern Confirmation Sheet.
It is the responsibility of the student intern to verify that all documents are filled out and have been received by the Community Health Internship Coordinator.
It is the student intern's responsibility to verify with St. Cloud State University that all insurance and liability matters are in effect prior to starting the internship field experience. Be prepared to show proof of coverage to the agency prior to starting the internship. The student internship (HLTH 446) has a special fee of $35 built into the student's fee statement.
