The Second Annual Summer Leadership Institute will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in Atwood Memorial Center. More information will be provided in the near future.

The Professional Life Cycle of Women in Higher Education Administration

Keynote Speaker Sharon McDade

Sharon A. McDade is the director of the American Council on Education Fellows Program, the nation’s premier higher education leadership development program. McDade came to ACE in January 2008 from The George Washington University, where she served as director of the Center for Educational Transformation and Leadership, associate professor of higher education, and coordinator of the higher education administration program. Her research, teaching, and consulting have focused on the leadership development of higher education administrators as well as the management of colleges and universities.

A nationally renowned expert on higher education leadership, McDade has been involved with leadership development programs for senior administrators such as the Harvard Institute for Educational Management, the Massachusetts Higher Education Executive Leadership Institute, and the National Association for Women in Education’s Institute for Emerging Women Leaders.

Keynote Address: The Professional Life Cycle of Women in Higher Education Administration

The keynote address considers the stages and themes in the professional and career life cycle of women administrators. Beginning with entry positions in academic affairs (faculty) and administration, the presentation will consider the ladder rungs to senior posts and the presidency, and explore the leadership learning and stretching that typically is absorbed along the way.

This session explores higher education policies currently being developed by the new Obama administration and how they impact the work and possibilities for women in higher education, including our institutions, students, and funding, and what we can expect from the Obama administration and the 111th Congress both in regard to the Higher Education Act Reauthorization and upcoming initiatives.

This session explores various stages of professional socialization related to female administrators, including points of entry, transitions, networking, sponsorship, challenges/obstacles, and gender specific aspects, including tips and recommendations for making transitions more positive and helpful to women in the academy.

The panel is comprised of members of a research team who will share preliminary findings from a mixed-method research study specifically designed to investigate how the professional status of female faculty members is affected by their personal status. This study sheds light on the academic pipeline and the advancement of women in higher education.
