Student Health Insurance Update

Friday, April 11, 2014

Due to the requirements of the Affordable Care Act going into effect January 1, 2014, the cost of insurance for domestic students by our current provider will increase substantially.  If you are currently covered by MnSCU’s student health insurance plan offered through United Healthcare Student Resources, your policy will expire on August 14, 2014.

There are two Minnesota Health Care Programs MnSCU students may qualify for due to their income status, they are Medical Assistance (MA) or MinnesotaCare.  Students currently enrolled in Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare programs will automatically be moved to MNsure as part of their renewal process.  If a student is not currently enrolled in one of these programs and would like to know if they qualify for either of them, their eligibility status will automatically be reviewed when they apply for coverage through MNsure.  Additional information regarding Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare can be found at .

The Affordable Care Act requires everyone to have health insurance or be subject to penalties.  There are several options available to students, which include, being covered on their parent’s policy until age 26 or by purchasing coverage through the Minnesota Health Insurance Exchange (MNsure).  Students can enroll in the exchange at

MnSCU will continue to offer student health insurance to international students according to Board Policy 3.4.1 part 3, subpart B.2.
