Student Health Services

H1N1 Influenza

Student Health Services has received a limited amount of injectable H1N1 vaccine and is taking calls now from students to schedule appointments for Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and State and Local Health Departments have recommended that our initial supply of vaccine be reserved only for the following groups:

  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
  • Health care and emergency medical service workers who have direct contact with patients or infectious material
  • Adolescents 18 years of age or younger who have chronic medical conditions that put them at higher risk of influenza related complications (asthma or other chronic pulmonary disease; cancer; cardiovascular disease; diabetes; pregnancy; weakened immune system; or kidney, liver, blood, or neurological disorders)

There is no charge for the vaccination.  Our initial supply may not meet the needs of all the students in the above categories, so we will continue to advocate for more vaccine for our campus community and update students when conditions change or more vaccine is expected.

Call 320-308-3191 for an appointment.

Faculty and staff who meet the criteria listed above, and wish to receive the H1N1 vaccine, are encouraged to consult with their personal health care provider regarding vaccine availability.  For more information about the vaccine, go to the following link from the Minnesota Department of Health:  http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/basics/vaccine.html

H1N1 Vaccination Consent Form

Student Health Service continues to take precautions to limit the potential spread of H1N1 Flu (swine flu).

Should I be seen?

Most people with flu–like symptoms will not need to be seen by a medical provider. If you have questions about flu, or think you have flu-like symptoms, please read "What You Can Do About the Flu". The second page gives instructions for people who are sick, and how to determine if an appointment is needed. After reading this information, if you feel you need to be seen, call 320-308-3193 for an appointment. Please put on a mask provided at Health Services front door before you enter the clinic.

Students should continue to follow standard recommendations for preventing the spread of the flu virus:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve when you cough or sneeze
  • Clean hands frequently and thoroughly – with soap and water or an alcohol based hand rub solution.
  • Limit your contact with others who may be ill
  • Clean your hands after shaking hands or having other close contact with other people- before eating or preparing food, or touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Stay home from work or school, and generally avoid going out in public if you are sick
