Alcohol

The most widely used depressant among college students is alcohol. There are many short term and long-term risks associated with consuming alcohol. These risks can lead to detrimental consequences for many college students who decided to abuse alcohol. The following information is provided to help understand how alcohol plays a role in the college setting.

  • Approximately 1,400 college students die from alcohol injuries. There are 15,000 thousand people who die from alcohol-related crashes annually. Finally, roughly 36% of traffic deaths of people between the ages of 15-20 were alcohol related.
  • Many students continue to struggle with academics because of drinking too much alcohol. Roughly 25% of college students stated they suffered academic class or absent, feeling fatigued during class, performing poorly on tests and papers, and ultimately receiving lower overall grades.
  • There are many risks that are caused from drinking alcohol. Combining alcohol with medications is very dangerous and many lead to accidental death. Every year, more that 500,000 college students are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol. For example, when students go out for their 21 st birthday, or “power hour,students become susceptible to several risks, including death,. Many students are sexually assaulted (including date rapes). Students who drink often neglect not to have protected sex, and many students claim they have been too intoxicated to know if they consented to having sex. Thousands of students between the ages of 18 and 25 are assaulted by another student who has been drinking. Thousands of Americans suffer from alcohol—may damage every organ in your body. Alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream and can increase for a variety of life-threatening disease, including cancer. Also, the amount of calories from alcohol can lead to unwanted extra pounds. Third, alcohol affects your self-control by depressing your central nervous system, lowering your inhibitions, and impairing your decision-making.
  • Lastly, alcohol is illegal for students under the age of 21. In many states, people under the age of 21 who are found to have alcohol in their system while driving can be charged with a minor while driving and have their license revoked for 30 days and a fine over 200 dollars.
