Radiologic Technology Program Information
Radiologic technologists are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging examinations and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in anatomy, patient positioning, examination techniques, equipment protocols, radiation safety, radiation protection and basic patient care. They may specialize in a specific imaging technique, such as bone densitometry, cardiovascular-interventional radiography, computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, quality management, sonography or general radiography. The radiologic technologists who specialize in radiation therapy, which is the delivery of high doses of radiation to treat cancer and other diseases, are radiation therapists and medical dosimetrists. (Information provided by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.)
Degree Requirements
The bachelor of science degree in radiologic technology requires a prescribed curriculum at St. Cloud State University and clinical course work at an affiliated school of radiologic technology.
During the first two years, students take general education and basic science courses at St. Cloud State University.
The clinical radiologic courses are taken during the last two years. This is called the clinical phase, and the courses in it prepare students to take the national certification examination in radiologic technology as well as fulfill the graduation requirements for the bachelor’s degree in radiologic technology from St. Cloud State University. (Thirteen credits in the areas of digital medical imaging and medical informatics will be taken from St. Cloud State University concurrent with clinical course work.)
The affiliated schools of radiologic technology are the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN and Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN.
