New Student Orientation

Library

Learning Resource and Technology Services is located in the Miller Center and contains the second largest academic library in Minnesota. It is a place where individuals will find rich collections of information resources, containing much of the knowledge and wisdom and some of the folly of many cultures in almost any format. In addition, it is a place where individuals will discover opportunities to create, manipulate, transmit, and output digital media. You will also find faculty and staff willing and able to provide assistance.

LR&TS also provides the computing and technology services and instructional programs to assure SCSU's transition to the future. We invite you to explore and use Learning Resources and Technology Services in person, during service hours, or electronically.

The LR&TS services are also fully accessible at lrts.stcloudstate.edu or from the SCSU Web site. To access, go to www.stcloudstate.edu and click on “Library”. Here you can research journals holdings, books, and many other resources. LR&TS staff also provide an orientation on the facilities and resources available to SCSU students and the public. Please feel free to inquire with the library staff for an orientation. SCSU librarians are available seven days a week. You can reach them in person at the reference desk, by e-mail, live chat, or over the phone. They will help you pick a topic, find articles, create a bibliography or any other research-related questions.

Other services include:

  • Internet connections for laptops
  • Computer facilities with PC and MAC computers
  • Scanners
  • Coffee shop
  • Online renewals
  • Study carrels
  • Group study rooms
  • Electronic and print reserves
  • Extended borrowing time for graduate students

The library also offers a number of support programs to help students accurately and efficiently create bibliographies and cite sources. RefWorks is a web-based software that helps you create bibliography in any format (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.). You can export citations from library databases (Multisearch, Academic Search Premier) into RefWorks then RefWorks will create your bibliography in seconds. Write-N-Cite is a small utility program (Windows and Macintosh) that helps create in-text citations as well as a bibliography as you write your paper. (Note: You need to download Write-N-Cite on your local computer.) It works well for large projects such as 20+ papers.

There are several drop-in library workshops presented during the fall semester 2007. For more information about these workshops please contact the library at lrtsinfo@stcloudstate.edu or call (320) 308-2084.
