Graduate Assistant Supervisors
We are delighted that you will be hiring and supervising graduate assistants. Your time and energy in supervising graduate students in academically relevant experiences contributes significantly to the quality of education at St Cloud State University.
The following information is intended to assist in the hiring and supervision of graduate assistants. Departments and supervisors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the information provided for both students and supervisors to facilitate a beneficial assistantship.

2011-2012 Employment Dates
Graduate assistant employment dates generally reflect the employment dates of University faculty. The dates for fall and spring semesters are as follows:
Fall 2011 August 16, 2011 – December 16, 2011
Spring 2012 January 3, 2012 – May 4, 2012
These dates represent a guideline for graduate assistants and employers. Departments and supervisors may identify different start and end dates based on position responsibilities. Please note: Full-term assistantships carrying the full stipend will typically begin prior to the 10th day of the semester. Those assistantships beginning after the 10th day of the term will typically have a pro-rated stipend.
Summer Employment Policy for Graduate Assistants
Any graduate student employed to perform the duties of a graduate assistant during the summer should be employed as a graduate assistant at the graduate assistant rate and subject to the policies of the School of Graduate Studies.
Graduate Assistant duties include those activities commonly performed by a graduate assistant during the academic year.
Graduate assistantships are not permitted to occur through the summer at student employment rates.
Graduate students may be hired as student workers during the summer to perform the duties consistent with student employment. The hiring office must provide notice to applicants of the duties and performance expectations and the rate of compensation. If hired as a student employee, they are subject to the rules and regulations governing student employment.
