In addition to the salary/stipend, both full-time and part-time graduate assistants are eligible for partial tuition remission based on appointment type.
The News Director is responsible for the news programming on KVSC. There are eight news updates on weekdays and several throughout the weekend. The News Director determines the format of the Newswatch program, News Features, Series, and special reports. The News Director is the main contact during breaking news events such as severe weather, fires, and law enforcement activity. The News Director oversees assistants within the department, assigns stories to reporting staff, interviews guests, covers campus and community news and works closely with station management and programming departments. The News Director archives audio and online stories, files monthly features report with the FCC Public Inspection File and enforces station news policies. The News Director coordinates entries for broadcast competitions such as the Minnesota Associated Press Broadcasters and Society of Professional Journalism.
•Ability to manage multiple projects and events at one time. This ranges from sorting of the incoming mail, e-mail and faxes with story assignments and follow-ups to news assistants and reporters, creating follow-up files and day files on specific stories. •Supervision experience: Ability to give feedback to staff including critique of news writing, reading and on-air approved announcers for news reading style. Monitor daily newscasts and offer feedback. •Live radio or television broadcast experience preferred. Print Journalism experience also accepted. Expectation to complete KVSC''s on air training program with the ability to host weekly newscasts. •Experience with recording equipment, digital editing software, word processing, social media (Twitter) and radio production experience optimal. •Strong organizational skills: arranging key interviews such as semester live update with President of SCSU, political candidate interviews, student government update live and other relevant segments. •Communication skills include hosting and overseeing weekly news meeting and representation at weekly general staff meeting.
