Program Overview

This program of study provides the requirements for driver education licensure, beyond the B.S. or B.A. teacher education degree. SCSU Driver Education Teacher Preparation program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and meets the most recent standards for online learning set by Quality Matters (QM). It is important that the applicant seeking driver education licensure have sufficient credits (13) to meet Minnesota Board of Teaching requirements.

Program Structure

  • Designed for working teachers.
  • The graduate certificate may be completed in one semester or two semesters.
  • Five courses in length.
  • All coursework may be completed through distance education.
  • Traffic Safety Education coursework includes 90% online courses and 10% through ITV.
  • The program offers four to six ITV sites throughout Minnesota.
  • Out of state students may view a taping of the ITV sessions and are e-mailed the media-site link the following day to view on their own computer.
  • Students in other states must check with their own state for specific licensure requirements.

Certificate Curriculum

Instruction is based on requirements of the Minnesota Board of Teaching rule, Rule 8710.4350 Teachers of Driver and Traffic Safety. Applicants seeking driver education licensure must earn 13 credits to meet Minnesota Board of Teaching requirements. Students in other states must check with their own state for specific licensure requirements.  

Minnesota Teaching Licensure (Driver Education)

The graduate certificate program meets the requirements of the Minnesota Board of Teaching, rule M-CAR 8710.4350. Visit: http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/arule/8710/4350.html.

  • This licensure is available to persons who already hold a teaching license.
  • Other interested candidates are welcome to take the TSE courses that plan to teach in a driver education commercial school setting.
  • Students in other states must check with their own state for specific licensure requirements.
