Leipold Banquet May 1, 2008
The Eighth Annual Leipold Lecture and Scholarship Banquet will be May 1, 2008
Radisson Hotel
Our Guest Lecturer is Dr. Mei-Po Kwan
Educated in China and the United States, Dr. Mei-Po Kwan is Professor of Geography and Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State University. Dr Kwan is Editor of the Annals of the Association of American Geographers (Methods, Models, and GIS section) as well as Associate Editor of Geographical Analysis. She has co-edited 3 books and has authored or co-authored over 80 book chapters and journal articles (all in little over a decade!). Professor Kwan has won numerous awards for her socially relevant research which applies and develops GIScience in topics relating to urban, transportation, social and economic geography. For example, her work has mapped and examined: variations in travel-to-work patterns according to gender; social access to employment and housing; post 9/11 Muslim identities; and the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) on daily lives, social networks, and gender relations within the household. While some of her most innovative scholarship is related to her cutting edge 3D and object-oriented GIS modeling, it is her concern for everyday individual experience in her work exploring the policy implications of the various ways people interact spatially and socially that makes her contribution to social science so unique and compelling.
