The results for the Fundamentals of Surveying national exam administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying in October 2008 have now been released. Once again SCSU students had a 100% pass rate.
All three SCSU students who took the exam passed. The pass rate for all other students (non-SCSU) who took the test was 85%. There are 15 subcategories of the exam. SCSU students scored higher than their national counterparts in 14 of the subcategories. The largest difference was in Geographic Information Systems Concepts where our students correctly answered 86% of the questions while the national average was 63% (23% difference). The other subcategories where our students performed significantly better than the national average were: 1) Algebra and Trigonometry (11% higher); 2) Written communication (11% higher); and 3) Field Acquisition and reduction (12% higher). Field acquisition is the ability to accurately collect data in the field. Things that might affect the accuracy of the field data such as the temperature and its impact on the length of your tape measure are included in this category. The test is administered twice a year, October and April.
