Learning Goals
Goals for Students enrolled in the First Year Experience
- Students will understand the value of claiming an education and will be able to practice active learning in a variety of contexts (classroom, small group and individual work, and communities)
- Students will understand and be able to articulate the relationship between robust intellectual inquiry and civic and professional life
- Students will connect positively and actively with the communities in which they are living and learning
- Students will recognize and be able to articulate the use-value of research, scholarship, writing, and dialogue across disciplinary, social, political, and geographical boundaries
- Students will understand how the University is structured, where to find academic, social, and career planning support, and will be active and strategic participants in the advising process
Goals for FYE Faculty Teaching in the First Year Experience
- Teachers will work collaboratively across disciplines to design theme-based courses which meet the learning goals of courses currently offered in the University’s Core Curriculum
- Teachers will incorporate a range of teaching formats including, but not limited to:
- Student and Faculty Forums
- Seminars
- Lectures
- Focus Groups
- Practica
- Field Experience/Community Action Research
- Small Group Work and Peer Tutoring
- Teachers will teach active-learning principles and strategies by encouraging and supporting student-led initiatives, publication of student research, and individual and collective student civic engagement
- Teachers will include introductions to the range of academic and social support services as well as the range of social and professional development opportunities available to students at SCSU
