Learning Goals

for students enrolled in the First Year Experience:

  • Students will gain an understanding of the value of a university education and practice active learning in- and outside of the classroom.
  • Students will gain an understanding of the relationship between university-level academic inquiry and civic/professional life.
  • Students will connect actively with both peers and faculty/staff in their learning communities.
  • Where available, students will benefit from the opportunity to live with other students in their respective learning communities.
  • Students will gain insight into the value of scholarship and dialogue across disciplinary and cultural boundaries.
  • Students will gain an understanding of how the university works  and where to find academic, social, and personal support.

for faculty teaching in the First Year Experience:

  • Faculty will coordinate their efforts to provide an integrated learning experience for FYE students.
  • Faculty will be encouraged to collaborate across disciplines in developing thematic FYE learning communities.
  • Within colleges or departments, faculty will be encouraged to develop FYE learning communities which meet the needs of incoming intended majors.
  • Faculty will also be encouraged to develop FYE learning communities designed to meet the needs of specific groups of students such as veterans or students without an intended major.
  • Faculty will encourage active learning and student engagement both in- and outside of the classroom.
  • Faculty will introduce students to academic and personal support services as well as social and professional development opportunities available to them at St. Cloud State.
