Making the transition from high school to college is an exciting and challenging time in your life. St. Cloud State recognizes that a positive, engaging first year experience can make a significant impact in terms of incoming students’ level of satisfaction, academic performance, campus involvement and progress toward graduation. For 2008-09, the First Year Experience program—commonly known as “FYE”—will offer a variety of Learning Communities designed to support first year students in making vital connections and a successful transition to university life. While participation in FYE is voluntary, it is highly recommended and offers incoming students an excellent way to get their feet on the ground and make the most of their first year at St. Cloud State.
Being part of an FYE Learning Community has several significant advantages:
- By taking a set of classes together with the same group of first year students, you will have an identifiable peer support network starting on day one;
- FYE students are automatically pre-registered for their spring semester FYE cohort class(es);
- Other students in your Learning Community share your interests;
- Enrollment in FYE classes is limited to 25, resulting in a more personable learning atmosphere and closer contact with faculty;
- FYE professors are committed to addressing the specific needs of first year students;
- Each FYE Learning Community has an Academic Resource Mentor (ARM), a junior or senior who is trained to offer support in adjusting academically and socially to college life;
- FYE students participate in outside-the-classroom activities such as social events and field trips;
- The FYE program is free and available to you whether you live on campus or commute;
- As an FYE student, you take the same classes as other first year students, but with the helpful guidance of FYE faculty and peer mentors.
