About the Program
After an Independent Study course on campus of SCSU, students arrive in Eichstätt for two weeks of of intensive German study and cultural orientation.  Students earn 12-15 credits from courses taught by the KU Faculty. Courses are offered at various language levels and include topics such as culture, film, literature and history.

About Eichstätt
Eichstätt is a small University town that attracts tourists and students from all over Germany. The Altmühl Nature Park, which surrounds the city is known for its cycling, canoeing and hiking. The city's large cathederal, castle, residence and other attractions bring in many tourists every year. Eichstätt sponsors festivals throughout the year, which are always within walking distance. The KU offers excellent opportunities to get involved in the community, whether it is playing soccer, organizing a community event or other activities which fit your interests. The city of Eichstätt is convenientally located between Nürnberg and Munich (München) in Bavaria. Ingolstadt, another large town is located just southeast and takes 25 minutes by train.

About the Program
Courses are taught in Spanish and include practical application of the language and may include Service-Learning projects.

About Concepción
If it were oriented horizontally, Chile would cover the distance from New York to San Francisco.   Chile has a wide array of features from the Andes Mountains to the beautiful beaches of the Pacific Ocean. Chile is fascinating in every way- geographically, ecologically, politically, socially and culturally. Concepción is located in the central part of Chile, known as the Eighth Region. This region holds 13 percent of the population with approximately 2 million inhabitants. The climate of the region is well defined seasons with a dry summer and a chilly, wet winter.

About the Program 
Students attend Akita National University and take classes within Akita's School of Education and Human Studies. These include courses in education, regional studies, international language, cultural studies, environmental studies, and mathematical sciences and can be taken in English or Japanese depending on the courses. Japanese language classes at all levels are offered .  A typical schedule would be six credits of Japanese language and culture classes and six credits of other university courses as listed above.  .

About Akita 
Akita National University is located in the Western part of Tohoku region, the northeastern district of the main island of Honshu (the main island of Japan). The university lies in the center of Akita City which has a population of about 310,000 and is about 350 miles from the capital of Tokyo. The city is surrounded by mountains and the sea. There is a multitude of natural scenery and lush vegetation that change with the four seasons. Many festivals and other activities are held throughout the year.  SCSU has a forty year relationship with Akita University:  the longest university agreement at St. Cloud State.

Scholarships Available

A number of education abroad scholarships are available at St. Cloud State, each varying in the amount they provide and the criteria necessary for award.

The Department of Languages and Cultures Offers:

-James E. O'Neill Grant; for International Study of Spanish

Selection criteria:

Applicants must be SCSU students who are accepted as Spanish majors or minors and who have completed SPAN 301 or its equivalent:

  1)  Hold an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher

  2)  Have been accepted for international study in a Spanish-speaking country, either within an SCSU International Study Program or another university program in a Spanish-speaking country

Recipients of the O’Neill Study Grant, which is aimed to help with travel and educational costs, will be determined by the faculty of the Spanish Section acting as a committee of the whole.The Section coordinator will act as a chairperson or will appoint a faculty member to serve in that capacity.

-The Langauges and Cultures Departmental Scholarship

Language Major Scholarship

            A merit-based scholarship available to all language majors;  it can be combined with other scholarships. 

Award: minimum scholarship is $500, awarded in spring 2014

Applicant qualifications:

* must be a declared major in a language program;

                        * a GPA in the major field of 3.5

                        * overall GPA of 3.3

* must have completed 6 credits at the 300-level prior to application

Application materials:

                        * 450-500 word essay on why the applicant has chosen this language and what he/she plans to do with it in the future.

                        *a copy of your transcript (showing GPA)

Deadline:  application materials must be received by March 19, 2014
