Faculty Biography: Phyllis VanBuren
Professor: Spanish, German, and Foreign Language Education

I earned my B.S. in Spanish, German and Education and my M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction, Spanish and German from St. Cloud State University. I earned my doctorate in Foreign Language Education and Hispanic Linguistics from The Union Institute in Ohio.

My teaching and professional interests focus on the teaching of foreign (world) languages and cultures and teacher education. At SCSU I have served on the Advisory Board for the College of Education, serve on the Last American Studies Committee, am an adviser for the International Relations Club, and have served on the Graduate Council, the Professional Development and Research Grant committees. I have directed the SCSU study program in Costa Rica and in Chile. As an invited professor, I taught an intensive course on the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language at the University of Costa Rica. While on sabbatical, I taught Spanish and supervised student teachers at Bethel College. I am an American Council on the Teaching of Languages and Cultures (ACTFL) certified tester of Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPI) in Spanish, a trained tester in German and a certified tester and trainer of the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI) in Spanish and a trained tester in German.
