Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy - Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)

Cumulative Grade Point Average (effective Academic Year 2009-2010)

The grade point average (GPA) calculation is based only on SCSU coursework.

Undergraduate: An undergraduate student must have the following minimum cumulative GPA based on SCSU credits attempted and accepted transfer credits.
           0 – 44 credits:  1.75
          45 or more credits: 2.00

Post-baccalaureate: A student pursuing another undergraduate degree, certificate or licensure must maintain at least a 2.65 cumulative GPA in courses completed following the conferring of the first bachelor’s degree.

Probation for Insufficient Grade Point Average

  1. A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below the minimum at the completion of any semester or summer term will be placed on financial aid probation for the next semester or term of enrollment.
  2. A student placed on probation must make an appointment at the Academic Advising Center to discuss academic progress.  A student who does not meet with an advisor in the Center may lose the right to appeal any subsequent suspension.  By careful planning for academic success, including retaking courses for improvement of grade, the student should be able to bring the cumulative GPA back to the minimum or above at the end of the probationary semester or term.
  3. If, at the end of the probationary semester or summer term, a student has achieved a 2.3 or better grade point average for the semester or summer term but has not raised his/her cumulative grade point average to the required minimum, the student will be granted one additional semester or summer term of probation in which to meet the minimum requirement.

Suspension for Insufficient Grade Point Average
A student on probation who fails to raise his/her cumulative grade point average to the minimum during the probationary period will be suspended from the university through the next semester.   Financial aid for all future terms will be cancelled.

Graduate: A graduate student must maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA based on all SCSU coursework taken as a graduate student to be eligible for financial aid.

Doctoral: A doctoral student must maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA based on all SCSU coursework taken as a doctoral student.

Probation for Insufficient Grade Point Average
A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 3.00 at the completion of any semester or summer term will be placed on financial aid probation for the next semester or term of enrollment.

Suspension for Insufficient Grade Point Average
A student on probation who fails to raise his/her cumulative grade point average to the minimum during the probationary semester or summer term will be denied continuation in the program of study.  Financial aid for all future terms will be cancelled.
