How to Apply for Financial Aid

Announcements - Forms - Entrance Loan Counseling - Frequently Asked Questions - Contact Us

Applying for financial aid can be complex. It is our goal to make the process a little easier for you and your family with the following suggestions:

  • Apply for a PIN on-line at www.pin.ed.gov This PIN will act as your electronic signature when you apply for financial aid on-line. Parents of dependent students can also apply for a PIN to act as their signature.

  • You and your family should complete your federal income tax returns as soon as possible after January 1. Having completed tax returns will make the application process much easier.

After you have completed your federal income tax returns, you are ready to apply for financial aid. There are two steps to apply for financial aid at St. Cloud State University.

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
SCSU's Federal School Code is: 002377. If you do not have access to the internet, paper FAFSAs are available at your high school guidance counselor's office or any college financial aid office.

  2. Complete the SCSU Application for Financial Aid. Remember to select the correct aid year for the application. The SCSU Application for Financial Aid should be completed and returned to our office along with copies of both parent and student federal income tax returns and wage statements (W-2 and 1099).

If you would like an estimate of your eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant or a Minnesota State Grant please visit the Financial Aid Estimator at the Minnesota Office of Higher Education website at www.getreadyforcollege.org and click on Financial Aid Estimator.

REMEMBER: Even if you are not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant or a Minnesota State Grant, there are many other types and sources of financial aid so we encourage you to complete the FAFSA and SCSU Financial Aid Application as found in the two steps listed above.

NOTE: If you or your family experiences a substantial change in income due to death, disability, unemployment or other similar circumstances, please submit a letter of explanation of your situation with your SCSU Application for Financial Aid. If you have already submitted your application, send a separate letter of your situation for us to review.
