Some students and families assume it is not wise for students to work during the academic year. Studies show that students, who work a modest number of hours per week (12-15) tend to have higher grade point averages, graduate at a faster rate, are less likely to drop out of school, and develop important job skills to include on their resumes.
Why? Some possible explanations are: 1) working students become better time managers and more organized; 2) employment exposes students to mentor-type relationships and increases interactions with "real world" people; and 3) employment provides financial resources that may be critical to meeting college costs.
Student Employment at SCSU
There are two types of student employment available at St. Cloud State University - work study and university student employment.
Work Study: Work study is a need-based employment program for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is awarded as part of a student's financial aid package. Students with demonstrated financial aid need are allocated money to be earned while working on-campus or at approved off-campus organizations. Eligibility is determined using information provided to our office on the FAFSA and the SCSU Financial Aid Application.
Work study funds are to be used to assist you with educational expenses during the year in which they are awarded. Beginning wage rates, effective August 23, 2006, are $8.00 per hour on-campus and $8.65 per hour off-campus. Most students work an average of 12-15 hours per week. Earnings are paid directly to the student every two weeks. Click here for the payroll schedule.
Please refer to the Work Study Program Guidelines for important information about payroll forms, responsibilities, evaluations, and other important employment related information.
If you are awarded work study:
- If you accept the award, please complete and return a work study application to the Office of Scholarships and Financial
Aid. Based on the information from your
work study application, you will be assigned a work study position. Positions are available both on-campus and off-campus. You will be notified of your work assignment approximately 2-3 weeks before the start of the semester.
- If you do not want to accept work study, please notify the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid so it can be removed from your financial aid package. Additional loan options may be available for students, who decline their work study award.
University Employment: University employment positions are on-campus
jobs open to all students
regardless of financial need. If you are interested in university employment, you may contact individual
departments or offices on campus regarding position openings.
Off-Campus Employment
Student
Employment Services, located in Centennial Hall 215, assists students seeking off-campus employment. Some on-campus
employment opportunities may also be listed with this office.
