||Special Events. “Digital Age Reporting: Deciphering the Social Media Society"
April 11, 2014
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Atwood Memorial Center Theatre Lounge
Event Summary: Perhaps no technology-based topic in recent years has attracted more attention than the rise of social media and impact on news. If journalism has always been about the 5W's, the who, what, why, where and when, now there's a sixth W, and that W stands for "wireless" or umbilical-free forms of communication. Journalists are functioning in a world where news reporting and information dissemination increasingly funnels through social media. The result appears to be the dismantling of centralized authoritative news sources. This year's First Amendment Forum will explore the ramifications of this societal shift and how professional journalism is being transformed as a communications craft. This event is sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists (Student Chapter) and Department of Mass Communications at St. Cloud State University.
