Night of Broken Glass

Date: November 10, 2013
Time: 3:00 PM
Location: James W. Miller Learning Resources Center
Description: Fine Arts. On Sunday, November 10th at 3:00pm St. Cloud State University presents “Night of Broken Glass” commemorating the Jewish Kristallnacht in music and images in the beautiful James W. Miller Learning Resource Center. The 2nd Floor Reading Court of the Miller Center will provide a unique setting for this special free event. As part of the ongoing series of educational activities by SCSU’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education, this collaborative event brings them together with the SCSU Department of Music to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Jewish Kristallnacht, often referred to as the “Night of Broken Glass.” “Night of Broken Glass” begins with a pre-concert presentation of powerful images paying tribute to Kristallnacht. This will set the stage for the program centerpiece: a rare performance of Steve Reich’s monumental work Different Trains (a 30-minute composition for pre-recorded sound and marimba quartet). The event will conclude with a special dedication to composer Stephen Paulus as the SCSU Concert Choir and Cantabile Girl’s Choir perform the final movement from Paulus’ Holocaust oratorio To Be Certain of the Dawn. This miraculous oratorio brought together the universities of St. Cloud State, St. John’s and St. Benedict in the spring of 2008 for first ever combined collegiate concerts on both campuses followed by a European tour that June. The experiences we encountered in Stephen’s music changed all of our lives and we honor him in this performance. Stephen Paulus suffered a stroke on the 4th of July earlier this year. After nearly three months he is starting to show some improvement in responding to simple commands, but the long-term prognosis is still uncertain. We continue to hope for the best for this remarkable composer.
