The rules for transferring courses into the TESL MA from other universities are the same for the online program and the on-campus program. Unless special arrangements exist, the Graduate School at SCSU allows only ten credits to transfer into the TESL MA, as it also the case for all graduate MA programs at SCSU.
These courses must be graduate credit, must come from a graduate program that is accredited by the national government of the country where the university is located, and they must not have counted for a previous graduate degree. Of course, the transferring courses must fit into the TESL MA with names and course descriptions that match the courses for which they are being transferred.
While we will transfer up to ten credits into the TESL MA, the TESL MA has a three-credit backbone with ten three-credit courses and six credits of thesis as the norm, and so for all practical purposes, students will be able to transfer 9 credits into the program.
But two other arrangements do exist:
- For students who have completed course work at other MnSCSU universities, SCSU can transfer up to 15 credits or five three-credit courses into the TESL MA;
Specifically, both the Minnesota State Universities at Mankato and at Moorhead as well as Winona State University have graduate course work in TESL and so students taking these courses at these institutions and who desire to transfer to SCSU should be able to apply 15 credits of TESL related course work from their original universities to the TESL MA program at SCSU.
- For students who are admitted Graduate students at international partner universities with dual degree program agreements, SCSU can also transfer up to 15 credits or five three-credit courses into the TESL MA as specific by the two universities.
Specifically, SCSU has a dual degree agreement with Woosong University in Daejeon, South Korea. Under this agreement, Woosong University TESOL MALL MA students could complete the TESL MA by adding 15 more credits or 5 courses and a six credit thesis to 15 credits or 5 courses of TESOL MALL course work.
For all transfer courses, these courses have to have been completed within a seven year period with the ending date of this period being the semester or summer when the TESL MA is awarded.
