TESL MA Courses: Linguistics:

Students in the TESL MA program are expected to take at least two courses in linguistics as listed below.  These courses are crucial to the preparation of TESL and TEFL teachers no matter what the age of the student they teach or the specific educational goal of the students.

6 credits for Plan A and 9 credits for Plan B

English 663:  Phonetics and Phonology, 3 credits;
English 664:  Pedagogical Grammar, 3 credits; and
English 666:  Sociolinguistics, 3 credits.

As stated previously, students should not attempt these courses without having first taken an introductory course in linguistics:  English 361 at SCSU.

Plan B students are required to take all three courses listed, as these are the only linguistics courses offered online.  Generally, Plan A students are advised to take English 664 or English 663 and English 666.  Please note that students can take a third linguistics course and it would count as an elective in the program.
