Latin American Experience

TESL Master's Program

Since 1997, Jim Robinson has began an involvement with Latin American programs.

From 1997 until 2007, Jim directed the Costa Rican TEFL Program.  During this program, six SCSU professor travelled to Costa Rica to offer the full range of applied linguistics courses at SCSU for a cohort of 25 Coast Rican English teachers.  Twenty-two of the group eventually completed their MA degrees.

In January 2007, Jim participated in the SCSU task force visit to the University de Concepcion in Chile.  From this visit, the international agreement between SCSU and UdeC was expanded to include:

  1. Establishing a student exchange whereFour or five English Education students from UdeC come to SCSU;
  2. Setting up a process for UdeC visiting scholars in English to come to SCSU and teacher;
  3. Lay the ground work for faculty exchanges; and
  4. Develop dual MA degree programs in TESL.

Since this time, SCSU has also recruited its first Chilean student for the TESL with a full graduate assistantship.
